THE BEGINNING OF OUR HEDGEHOG RESCUE JOURNEY

A Legacy Continued: The Genesis of Our Rescue

Our journey into the hedgehog rescue began in the summer of 2022 when we found a hedgehog needing help at the roadside in Kirkcaldy. We took the hedgehog home and called the only hedgehog rescue in the area but they were unable to take it. We released the hedgehog had fly strike so it was a race against time to get the much needed help it required. The SSPCA were busy so our only option was to drive the 50 mile round trip to the Fishcross wildlife centre.

A couple of weeks later we found another hedgehog and we were faced with the same scenario so again we made the trip. Sadly we heard that the two hedgehogs sadly passed away.

Knowing a lot of people wouldn’t take the time or effort to do such a journey we began learning as much as we could about wild hedgehogs.

In the autumn of 2022 we learnt that Sandy Boyd a dedicated hedgehog caregiver from Wormit in Fife made the difficult decision to retire after more than 20 years due to health concerns. Sandy generously donated his cages and equipment to us, providing a solid foundation for us to start our own rescue effort.

Initial Setup Challenges and Solutions

Initially, our operations were based in a spare room upstairs. While not ideal, this setup allowed us to begin our mission to care for sick and injured hedgehogs. However, it quickly became evident that the space was insufficient to handle the increasing number of hedgehogs in need. This led to a pivotal decision to expand our facilities.

Expanding Our Space for Greater Impact

Recognizing the need for more space, we transitioned the rescue operations into our converted garage, which had previously served as a playroom for our children and later as a storage room. This move provided the much-needed room to accommodate the growing number of hedgehogs requiring care.

Realising Our Vision: The Launch of the New Rescue Center

The transformation of our garage into a full-fledged hedgehog rescue center began just before Christmas. Within two weeks, intensive renovations breathed new life into the space, turning it into a sanctuary for the care and rehabilitation of our prickly friends. The new rescue center not only enhanced our capacity to help but also symbolized a new chapter in our commitment to wildlife conservation.

The two hedgehogs we tried to get help for may have passed away, but we have saved countless lives since because of what they have inspired.
